– 6,613 police officers cited in reported allegations of misconduct.
– 4,861 unique instances of law enforcement misconduct reported.
– 6,826 alleged victims.
– 247 deaths associated with reports.
– Approximately 17% of documented reports led to disciplinary action – but only about 8% of these cases resulted in an officer being convicted of a crime¹.
That is to say that out of 6, 613 police officers cited for allegations of brutality in the United States in 2010, only 17% of these citations led to any sort of reprisal and only a staggering 8% led to the conviction of a law enforcement officer¹. It’s almost as though police officers have are free to commit offenses towards the people they are supposed to serve with little to no fear of consequences.
